About Urrak

Also pronounced as Urraca, it is the drink that is the first fermented juice of cashew or coconuts. The fermented juice will be distilled and served as one of the famous alcoholic beverages of Goa. It is available for tasting only from March to May. However, some local restaurants might let you taste it even during February or June.

The local farmers start collecting all the apples that fall from trees after ripening. These apples are squeezed to collect their juice in a fermenting unit to proceed further with the procedure. The cashew wine is then distilled after the fermentation is completed. This first fermentation is known as Urrak. The further distillation process of Urrak is Feni. On request, you can taste this drink anywhere in the local bar, tavern, bars, and distilleries in Goa.

Feni Cocktail

Goa government allows you to carry Feni back home while leaving. If you even get it out of the state, you can try the cocktail to enjoy this drink in a tastier version.

  • Get a tall glass from the cabinet and fill it half with Urrak. You can decide the liquor percentage by selecting the alcohol quantity in the glass.

  • Add some ice cubes to the glass to get that cold flavour to the drink.

  • Adding no lime soda other than Limca can make the drink sweeter and tangier. The experts suggest this lime soda because it gives the right zing to the drink.

  • The drink is completed with a pinch of sea salt or rock salt. The final touch is the lime squeeze; the drink is ready to taste.

  • Now, decorate the glass with a lime-cut wedge, and the glass will be ready to serve.

The History

Feni drink came to Goa with the Portuguese. They brought cashew plants when they went in the 1500s and started planting them on the hill slopes. The trees not only restricted the soil pollution but gave the tasty cashews. As the raw fruit was not fit to eat, the Europeans threw them away.

The locals of Goa had vast knowledge about fermentation and distillation. They started collecting these discarded fruits and came up with the idea of a Feni drink. Since then, this drink has never failed to make people crave for it and try it whenever in Goa. It is a Goan drink and cannot be tasted at its best anywhere in the world.
